New open standard to revolutionise video surveillance
........................................................................................................................................................................

| October 2009
Andrew Walker, Technical Services Director of Structured Technology Services joined global leaders from the Information Transport System (ITS) Industry to speak about video compression standards at this year's BICSI European Conference together with Nick Platt-Higgins of Axis Communications.
They reviewed existing network video compression standards and considered why existing technologies (Motion-JPEG and MPEG-4) are a barrier to widespread network video adoption. H.264 is the latest and most efficient video compression standard which will provide greater efficiencies across all industries including video surveillance and telecommunications, and will be used in Blue-ray, iPod, YouTube, Xbox, PlayStation 3 and mobile devices. The standard presents opportunities to companies utilising video surveillance as it can significantly reduce bandwidth and storage consumption delivering 80% more compression than Motion JPEG and 30% more than MPEG-4 Part 2 without sacrificing image quality.
H.264 format is becoming more broadly available in network cameras, video encoders and video management software. To take full advantage of H.264 technology, companies should ensure that all parts of their network video surveillance solution will support the H.264 standard.
